Size: 1/4—3/8 in. (Among the Largest Ant)
Color: Often black, but may have reddish or yellow color
Habits: Nest in dead wood—trees, landscape timbers, stumps,
logs etc.. Parent colonies may include satellite colonies that
invade homes in search of food. Will nest in any suitable void.
Nests in homes can often do great damage. They do not eat wood
but will hollow out “galleries” in the wood. Often
signs will include piles of wood shavings.
Size: 1/10 in.
Habits: Invade homes in search of food. Will nest outdoors under
stones, along curbs, beneath slabs, sidewalks, patios, and driveways.
Inside under floors and walls. Often found in slab construction
homes. Indication may be piles of displaced soil next to pavement.
Size: 1/16 in.
Color: Light Yellow
Habits: Often in food service areas. Will nest in any well protected
area throughout a structure. Travel along electrical wires or
plumbing pipes. Very large colonies. Will split up and disperse
to different areas of home when disturbed or sprayed. Specific
baits and targeting needed.
LITTLE BLACK ANTS:
Size: 1/8 in.
Color: Jet Black
Habits: Nest in any suitable, moist place, under rotting wood,
brick or rock. May establish colony inside a wall or under carpet
near a doorway. Partial to sweet honey scented fruit trees, roses
GENERAL ANT INFORMATION:
There are many species of house-infesting ants, the ones listed
above are common to the Midwest. A professional can identify the
ant and provide the best means of elimination and control. Many
ant problems can be controlled through the use of baits or sprays.
Baits are carried back to a nest and fed to the other ants in
the colony, resulting in elimination. Winged ants are best controlled
with liquid and or dusts.
